Countdown to Shark Week: Expedia Says Top Traveling Nation Afraid of Sharks Is…

Expedia's annual Flip Flop Report is out today and while travelers are on countdown to Shark Week, they can while away the time with statistics from the survey on what type of traveler is afraid of sharks and which ones are not.

According to the Harris poll of behaviors and preferences of beachgoers in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia, a whopping 85 percent of Singaporean beachgoers reported a fear of sharks, with 41 percent refusing to swim as a result. Forty percent of American beachgoers said they were afraid of sharks but only 7 percent indicated that they avoid the water because of them. And 71 percent of beachgoers in Denmark reported they had "no concern" about sharks.

Who knew the Danes were so fearless when it came to sharks?  It might have something to do with being acclimated to them through attractions like the brand new Shark Centre in Grenaa where travelers can experience "close encounters" with the animals, either in an aquarium tunnel or through in-water swims with tropical sharks.
